choosing your print size

Have I mentioned how much I love Pinterest yet this week?  The idea for this blog post was of course found on there and I thought it was such a fabulous way to illustrate how much of your image is cropped based on the size of print you order.  Now I don’t want to get all ‘math geek’ on you but lets just say that you need to look at the ratio when you are deciding on your print size.  For instance, all photos that I show in my galleries are in a 2:3 ratio (so they will print in a 4″ x 6″ size without any cropping involved).  I do this to keep as much available space on the image before you’ve told me what size you want printed.  The most common print ratio’s are as follows:

2:3 – such as 4×6, 8×12, 16×24
5:7 – such as 5×7, 10×14
4:5 – such as 8×10, 16×20

Make sense?  Well to illustrate what happens when you decide to go with a 5:7 or 4:5 ratio sized print, I’ve got this nifty little image here showing the amount that will be cropped off based on your choice.  Mind you, I would obviously try to centre the 8×10 a little more so we aren’t chopping off her coat but you get the point!

If this still doesn’t make sense (which is likely since hey, I’m not a teacher) then please shoot me a message and I’ll try my best to clarify.
